NexStar National Talent Competition is proud to present the ultimate in talent competition with special opportunities for the beginner dancer. Please read the following rules carefully as failure to abide by them could result in disqualification: ENTRIES MUST BE RECEIVED IN THE NEXSTAR OFFICE 21 DAYS PRIOR TO THE COMPETITION DATE. ANY ENTRIES RECEIVED AFTER 21 DAYS WILL BE SUBJECT TO A 10% LATE FEE. GENERAL DIVISIONS: Solo, Duet/Trio, Small Group (4-9), Large Groups (10-19), Line (20 or more). Adult Category: Any performer 20 years or older dancing in any solo, duet/trio or group is NOT eligible for the General High Score Awards. If enough routines are entered in the Adult Category, a special High Score Award will be awarded at that regional. Adult division will include Teachers, Professionals , Parents, etc.. PERFORMANCE LEVELS: **NOTE**A Duet/Trio or Group Routine must be 50% dancers that qualify for the Performance Level entered. PreStar Division: This division is for a dancer who takes a maximum of 3 hours of dance per week. It is for the novice/beginner dancer who has not attended much, if any, competitions. It is designed to let the novice dancers get the feel for competition, stage performances, judges, audiences, etc., and will be adjudicated, as well as receive additional high score awards within their division. It is NOT mandatory that beginner students enter this Level. NewStar Division: Dancers that study between 3-5 hours of class per week and have limited competition experience should consider the NewStar Division. This division will be adjudicated as well as receive additional high score awards within their division. NexStar Division: Dancers who take more than 5 hours of class per week and have significant competition experience should be considered for this division. The NexStar Division is open to all performers and will be adjudicated, as well as receive additional high score awards within their division. **NOTE** Because NO competition can possibly know how many hours a child dances or for how many years they have danced, teachers are left to their own sound judgment when entering routines. Routines that are obviously under-placed may be elevated by the judges. All decisions are Final. TIME LIMITS: Solos – 2 min. 45 sec.; Solo Fashion Models Only - 1 min. 30 sec.; Duet/Trios - 2 min. 45 sec.; Small Group - 3 minutes; Large Group - 4 minutes; Lines – 4 minutes; Production – 6 minutes. Note: Overtime will result in automatic point deduction of one point or a fraction thereof for every 5 seconds overtime. It should also be noted that contestants will be required to record their own music on an individual cassette tape or CD. All music must be recorded at the proper speed. There must be only one routine per tape/CD, properly cued at the beginning of the music. For emergency, it is advisable to have a back up tape/CD in your possession. Be certain to mark each tape/CD clearly with the name of the routine, age division, entry number and studio name. Extended times for groups is an option for groups running over the time limits. (See extended time rules and fees.) Only Three Solos are permitted by the same performer. A Fourth Solo may be added in the Title Competition ONLY. (See Title Rules below) NexStar reserves the right to add additional competition days/times, if deemed necessary. Entries will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis, and will be limited depending on the time available at each regional location. NexStar also reserves the right to move the competition location, if it becomes necessary, due to circumstances beyond its control. PERFORMANCE CATEGORIES: Acro/Gymnastics - A routine which contains primarily gymnastic tricks, including, but limited to walkover, front/back limbers, handstands, headstands, cartwheels, etc. There should be a blend of gymnastics and dance together. Ballet - A routine that consists of classical steps and ballet technique. Ballet shoes only can be worn in this category. Pointe - A routine that consists of ballet/pointe technique. Pointe shoes only can be worn in this category. Baton - Routine using baton(s) and baton technique Character - A routine that portrays a character that is easily recognizable, i.e., a cat, dog, or some movie or cartoon character, etc. Cheerleading - A routine that has a combination of strong, sharp movements, vocal cheering and may incorporate dance. Clogging - A routine which uses clogging technique. Contemporary - A routine which combines both lyrical and modern movements. Drill Team - A group performing military type moves with precision marching and may incorporate any type of dance. Fashion Modeling - FORMAL (solos only) - Any party dress or "After 5" attire. Runway "T-style" modeling that must include modeling technique. Fashion Modeling - SPORTSWEAR (solos only) - Casual skirts, pants, etc., select sport, skiing, tennis, horseback riding, etc. Runway "T-style" modeling that must include modeling technique. Fashion Modeling - SWIMWEAR (solos only) - Any swimwear or swimsuit & cover-up. Runway "T-style" modeling that must include modeling style technique. Folkloric - Routine incorporating ethnic styles of dance such as polkas, Hawaiian, Spanish, etc. Funk/Hip Hop - A dance that consists of the latest street dance style, as seen in current dance videos. Jazz - A routine that utilizes jazz technique such as splits, isolation, leaps, etc. Lip Sync - A routine that utilizes pantomime techniques and mimics voices on a pre recorded tape. Lyrical - A routine that is performed to the lyrics or mood of the music. Modern - A routine containing a contemporary style of dance. Musical Theater - A routine performed to the music of a Broadway musical show or a movie musical. Open - A routine that is a combination of any of the other categories; a routine that does not exactly fit any of the definitions of any other category. Pom Pon - A routine combining dance with the use of pom pons for at least 80% of the routine. Production - This category pertains to the Line division only and must have a minimum of 20 performers. Song and Dance - A routine that combines dancing and singing. The singing may have back up vocal accompaniment only. Tap - A routine utilizing tap technique and must be performed with tap shoes only. Vocal - Routine may be any type of vocal presentation. Accompaniment must be on tape. No lead vocals permitted on tape; backup voices only will be permitted. AGE DIVISIONS: 4 & Under; 5-6 Yrs; 7-8 yrs; 9-11yrs; 12-14 yrs; 15-16 yrs;17-19 yrs; 20-29 yrs; 30-39 yrs; 40-49 yrs; 50 yrs and over. NOTE: IN THE JAZZ, TAP, LYRICAL AND OPEN CATEGORIES, CONTESTANTS WILL ENTER SINGLE AGE DIVISIONS. This will apply to Age 4 & Under, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 & Over. All other age divisions will remain the same.
